A post of Birthday thoughts

While I'm not sure how I'd handle a husband with furry feet, I do know that I wouldn't mind one small in stature, who wore cravats, and I could probably even learn to love pipe weed. Oh well, while I know Bilbo Baggins is not amongst my birthday gifts today, I have a feeling the 1st season of Sherlock will be and that's almost as good. ;)

One of the questions that always brings unwanted pressure at my birthdays is "What are you doing to celebrate?" It depends on your point of view as to whether I'm celebrating in style or not. A lot of women need a big party and a group of friends for their birthday to be a success. I've had those parties in the past and they are always fun, but it's not a requirement for me to have a happy birthday. This time, as I welcome my 28th year, I'm simply staying home with my family. And you know what? For me, right now, at this time in my life, staying home with them is FUN! I love it!

I cleaned out the closet today. It brought a sense of renewal to see that huge stack of clothes waiting to go to the second-hand store. I have Charity to thank for inspiring me. I found a couple of new outfit ideas that I'd overlooked already in my closet, which means fewer things to buy in the future. I plugged in my FAVORITE Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee movie, That Funny Feeling and I finished knitting a new scarf out of the cutest pom-pom yarn I've ever seen, all in hues of pink, yellow, and teal. As I sat on my bed, finally finished with the closet and watching those last moments of my movie, I heaved a sigh of happiness. I am happy to be here, right here, right now.

Birthdays sometimes bring that unpleasant sensation of change. My 26th birthday was miserable because I knew I was now on the slide to 30. My coworkers are all over 45 so they've forgotten what that feels like, to be heading toward the big 30. They still think of me as young and I am young, but not as young as I used to be. Only, this year, I don't mind it. God brings us adventures every day, even if it's just discovering something lurking in the bowels of the closet that you thought you'd misplaced years ago. I'm busy with school and work and family and I lead a fulfilling life. The close friends I do have are precious to me and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world. And for whatever reason, I'm starting to think God has a specific plan for me this year. It just feels different, as if there's a tinge of excitement on the air. We'll see what He has in store.

Out of all the birthdays I've had since I turned 20, this one seems the most relaxing, the most calming. And if I throw a little Bobby Darin into the mix, well who can blame me. Another man not over 5'7"! I've got a thing for compact guys! ;)

  1. Happy birthday, Carissa! I am glad you had a lovely day. =)

My idea of a fun birthday is just chilling and relaxing at home with my family - it is quiet, yes, but just how I like it.

    1. My day was ideal, exactly as I had hoped. No stress, no rushing for party preparations, just family and fun. And even though I didn't get Bilbo Baggins, I did receive the 1st season of "Sherlock" and a John Watson t-shirt to go with it. Boy, does my sister know me! :)

  2. You really do have a thing for compact guys! *cough*Dean Winchester*cough* I've always loved a tall, thin guy myself. Blame me reading Sherlock Holmes when I was twelve.

This year does seem different. Maybe it's the year both our lives will change for the better. I'm sliding nearer to 30 than you but I'm not afraid of it. It's just a number. It can be overcome. =)

Love you, my dearest friend -- also, when you next visit, you must bring your Watson shirt. I'll wear my Sherlock shirt, and together we will be awesome! =D

    1. How did I miss this reply?

I don't see my "compact guys" fetish disappearing anytime soon. It amuses my coworkers immensely, at least the two that are aware of it. I made the mistake of showing them a picture of Martin as Bilbo and I guess they saw the "eagerness" shining in my face or something. Now I'm cursed with having a "thing" for short guys with hairy feet. Help me!

My Watson shirt is excited to meet your Sherlock shirt! ;)

  3. Thank you for stopping by my blog today, my fellow Sandra Dee/Bobby Darin fan. I'm always overjoyed to meet new classic movie enthusiasts.

Seems we have something else in common. Was your birthday yesterday, the 26th? Mine is today, the 27th? So we are both late January babies...albeit 20+ years apart.

I think celebrating one's birthday at home with the family is about the nicest way to celebrate. My husband and kids took me out for dinner, then we came home and watched...you guessed it...an old movie.

Happy birthday...wishing you a wonderful next year of life.

    Blessings,
    Patti
